Insurance

You can use this area to learn more about your insurance with us, and what you may have to consider.

A quick overview

Insurance can help you protect your current lifestyle and provide for your family in the event of your sickness, injury, or death. We offer you flexible death, total and permanent disability (TPD) and income protection insurance options for your stage of life.

You automatically receive basic death and total and permanent disability (TPD) and income protection from the date you start your new job* if you:

  • are under 65 years of age
  • and

  • join the PSSap within 120 days of starting your new job and are permanent and non-ongoing with a contract term of at least three months working more than 15 hours per week.

If you are over 65 (but under 70) years of age, you can apply for death TPD cover and be underwritten by AIA Australia who will then decide whether to accept your application for cover (see the Insurance variation form and AIA personal statement.)

You can change your level of income protection, vary the waiting period or opt out altogether.

Income protection cover is not available to persons who:

  • are over 65 years of age
  • do not work more than 15 hours per week
  • are neither permanent employees or non-ongoing employees with a contract of more than three months.

Premiums are deducted from your PSSap account at the end of each calendar month. Find out more about insurance for you and your family in our Product Disclosure Statement.

* If you are not 'at work' on the date you start your job, you receive 'new events cover' until you are continuously 'at work' for three consecutive months, then full cover will apply.

If you joined the PSSap before 1 March 2010 find out about the changes to your insurance here.

When to check your insurance

We recommend you check your insurance arrangements at least once a year. A good time to do this is when you receive your annual member statement. When circumstances in your life change, your insurance may be affected and you may need to look at your insurance to make sure it is still suitable for you. Here are some examples of circumstance changes which may affect your insurance:

  • a change from permanent to casual, or casual to permanent work
  • overseas posting
  • salary increase or decrease
  • turning 65 years of age
  • if you go on leave without pay (LWOP)
  • marriage
  • divorce
  • birth of a child
  • death of a spouse

If any of these relate to you, or you are simply not sure if a change will affect your insurance, contact us on 1300 725 171 or members@pssap.gov.au.

To nominate your beneficiaries use the Beneficiary nomination form which you will need to have signed and witnessed in a particular way to be valid. It must also be renewed every three years.
